By Shannon Allen , last updated January 5, 2012

Winter brings cold and dreary days but that is no excuse for your nails not shine bright. Adorning your nails in the chic colors of the season can really add some excitement and attention to your wardrobe. So make the most of this winter season by testing out one of these classic five winter nail polishes.

Muted Metallics

Metallic colors have really been hot the last year or so and this season they are really sizzling in muted tones. For the winter, muted golds and silvers are taking center stage as are metallic twists on traditional shades. Dior Vernis in Rouge Or is a definitely a favorite as is the silvery rose shade of Deborah Lippmann's Glamorous Life. Find the perfect shade of your favorite precious metal to keep you feeling luxurious this winter.

Navy

Navy nails have definitely made a comeback this season and are being seen everywhere from city streets to the red carpet. Opaque navy nails, such as Butter London's Royal Navy, where especially popular during the fall fashion shows and even Kristen Stewart flaunted a shimmering navy nail at the premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Sephora by OPI's Countdown to the Kiss or Deborah Lippmann's Lady Sings the Blues are two fantastic choices for the shimmering navy look. However, it is important remember to keep your nail length short and defined when wearing a dark shade like navy for a maximum chicness.

Emerald Green

There is something so luxurious and captivating about the dark, jeweled tone of emerald green. Bathe your nails in the richness of this color this season with shades such as Zoya's Holly Nail Polish or Illamasque's Kink Nail Varnish. The warmth and richness of emerald green will keep you feeling chic and fresh no matter how cold the weather gets outside.

Classic Red

The classic red finger nails never goes out of style especially during the winter months. Red is bold and sexy and can really make a statement when worn correctly. Keep in mind, red nails must be finished with a nice, smooth lacquer finish to really shine. Another approach to sporting this timeless color is adding a little shimmer to your red. Dior Merveille Vernis offers a decadent shimmering red or try Zoya Nail Polish in Gia with a high-gloss topcoat. A perfect accent for your little black dress or jeans and pea coat, with red on your fingernails you are sure to be a hit.

Dark Chocolate

Black nails have taken a more sophisticated and modern look this season by taking on more of a dark chocolate look. Golden, cognac, and maroon undertones turn ordinary black into something much more spectacular. Lancome offers a limited edition Le Vernis Devine lacquer in Noir 29 for fabulous nails with golden undertones to reflect light. Illamasque Taint Nail Varnish is another luxurious dark chocolate color especially with a top coat of CND's Gold Sparkle Effects. Remember to always apply two coats of these darker shades to prevent any streaking.
