5 Great Christmas Gifts for Tweens in 2011

By Stacy Zeiger , last updated November 18, 2011

Tweens are difficult to buy for during the holidays. Not quite teenagers, they want to be given grown-up gifts, but still long for some of the toys and other fun items that kids enjoy. These five great Christmas gifts for tweens combine both elements to provide them with a gift they will enjoy.

Games

Many board games are designed to appeal to tweens. Give a group game such as Apples to Apples, Twister or Catchphrase so that tweens will be able to invite friends over for a sleepover or party and enjoy playing the game together. Card and dice games also make popular gifts for tweens. Give one of the many variations on the game Uno or a card game such as Farkle, Yahtzee or Left Center Right.

Candy

Candy makes for an enjoyable Christmas gift for Tweens. Fill a box with Christmas-wrapped versions of popular chocolate bars, sour candies, gumballs and candy canes. Tween boys will appreciate unique Christmas candies, such as those shaped like lumps of coal or candy to resemble reindeer poo. Look for candy that comes in unique flavors and containers that resemble a tween’s favorite stars and cartoon characters. Candy dispensers filled with gumballs or other small candies also provide a unique Christmas gift for Tweens.

Books

A lot of tweens enjoy reading popular book series such as Harry Potter and Twilight. Browse best seller lists and lists of young adult book award winners to find books that tweens will enjoy. Many local bookstores also highlight some of the books that are currently popular with tweens. Because many tweens desire to fit in, they will enjoy reading the popular books that all of their friends are also reading. For a tween who does not enjoy reading, give the gift of a graphic novel or pair a book with its movie version.

Music

Most tweens enjoy listening to popular music. Purchase a CD from the best seller list or give a tween an iPod or mp3 player to allow him to download his own music. If a tween has an interest in playing music, give him a video game that allows him to play music or purchase him a new guitar or drum set. A gift card to a music store or online music service will allow a tween to pick out his own music to fill his mp3 player with.

Gift Cards

Tweens are not quite at the age where they are good at handling their own money, but they enjoy having spending power. Provide a tween with a gift card to purchase a desired gift after Christmas. You may choose a gift card to a large discount store, a popular clothing store for tweens or a video game store. Many tweens will also enjoy a gift card to a fast food restaurant so they can treat their family or friends to dinner after Christmas. Gift cards to online retailers, such as Amazon, iTunes or Facebook, will also be enjoyed by tweens.
