The Lilly Pulitzer collection is a clothing line that specializes in women's clothing and is usually characterized by bright, bold, colorful designs. Many of Lilly Pulitzer's dresses are created specifically for special events, but there are plenty that are also appropriate for other occasions such as cocktail parties or even to wear casually.
In 1959, Lilly Pulitzer, then 21 years old, eloped with her husband and moved to Palm Beach. There she began selling juice as a way to make money and pass the time while her husband was running the family orange groves. Many of her clothes became stained with brightly colored juice. This gave her the idea to start a clothing line of brightly colored and printed dresses. The clothing line was a huge success and quickly became popular in resort towns throughout the United States.
Currently, the Lilly Pulitzer collection offers a variety of colorful, printed dresses. There are dresses made specifically for weddings and graduations, as well as a bridal collection, a cocktail collection, and a collection for daytime wear. Many of the dresses are knee-length or higher, intended to be worn in warm weather during the spring and summer. Prominent colors of the dresses include light blue, pink, and pale yellow, although this is by far not the limit of the dress colors. Most of the dresses are sleeveless, and many are strapless as well. There is an entire line within the Lilly Pulitzer collection called "the little white dress," which is exclusively short, plain white dresses. Most of the Lilly Pulitzer dresses are priced between $200 and $400.
In addition to dresses, Lilly Pulitzer sells beach-ready clothing and sportswear, including yoga pants, polos, skirts, cardigans, scarves, sleepwear, and swimwear. Like the dresses, most of these feature bright, colorful designs.
