Size, Budget and Planning

What you are able to do with your basement is going to depend on the size of the space and the amount of money that you can spend. If you have a rather large basement, and are wanting to fill it with brand new items until all of the new space is filled up, you might run the risk of overspending just to satisfy the space. If you simply must, then cut costs by decorating your basement with items from retailers like Target, Walmart, Kmart or any other store that will allow you to find modern, quality items that won't reveal you decided to save at all. If the budget is not an issue, visit your local furniture stores and outlets, or opt to shop online at some amazing stores like Ikea.com. Either way, set a budget for your basement redecordating project and stick to it.The last thing you want is to be half way through a decorating project and discover that you have run out of money.

Style and Intention

Redecorating is all about "out with the old, and in with the new." When you start thinking about how you want to fill your space, think about how you want to feel when you walk in the room. If the objective is to relax, the decor is going to look much different than if you are designing your basement to double as an at home gym. You will also want to take into consideration the color scheme that you want to work with. Choosing bright, bold colors for your basement decor, like reds and yellows will create a very different atmosphere and mood than if you use earth tones like brown and blue.

If you have absolutely no idea what kind of mood you are going with, draw from your surroundings to figure out what your home already has, and the different pieces of art, paintings, sculptures or patterns that already exist in your home. A basement that is meant to relax and entertain friends, might be filled with mocha leather couches, an entertainment center that houses a surround sound system, books for leisure reading, special photographs framed throughout the room and a space to sit and lounge. If you enjoy entertaining, you might opt for a small bar filled with a selection of spirits for special ocassions and celebrations with friends. Regardless of how you tackle the  basement space, the most important thing to remember in decorating your basement is to make sure it is a place you love to be.
