Bathroom Wallpaper Ideas

Recently, you may have been spotting a lot of really cool ideas for wallpapering your bathroom in design magazines and on home improvement shows. If you're like most homeowners, your bathroom is the smallest room in your house. While wallpaper may seem overwhelming in a bigger room, it can make your little bathroom look cute and cozy. Depending upon the paper you choose, however, it can also make your bathroom seem claustrophobic. There are a few tricks you can learn, though, that can help you to make any wallpaper look good in your bathroom, no matter how dark, heavily patterned or colorful it is.

Choose a Faint Pattern

If you want to wallpaper your entire bathroom, then you would do best to choose a faint or neutral pattern or something in a pale color. A loud, bright pattern can make a tiny room seem oppressive. This is especially the case if you plan to wallpaper from the floor to the ceiling. Being completely surrounded by intense shades and designs is going to give you a headache. Instead, if you want to cover all of your walls in wallpaper, choose something subtle. Remember that your pattern could seem much more visible once you are surrounded by it. You should also not forget that you will probably be using the bathroom to shave or put your makeup on. Pale colors reflect more light, so it will be easier for you to see what you are doing every morning if you choose light-colored wallpaper for your bathroom.

Wallpaper Small Sections

Bright, saturated hues can also look really cool in your bathroom, if you use them the right way. If you want to add a splash of color or a bold pattern to your bathroom with wallpaper, consider only wallpapering a section instead of the entire bath. This can be done a number of ways. The easiest thing to do is to tile the bottom half of your walls, then wallpaper the top half. You can use a solid color tile that matches one of the colors in your wallpaper. Tile has the added benefit of being very easy to clean. If you don't want to tile, you can wallpaper a single wall. For example, just wallpaper the wall behind your mirror. Then you get the benefit of the color and pattern, but you won't feel enclosed by the pattern.

How to Fake Wallpaper

Just because you are renting does not necessarily mean that you need to forget about having a pattern in your bathroom. If you are like most renters, there is no way that your landlord is going to agree to let you wallpaper the bathroom. Wallpaper is just not practical in a rental property because it is too difficult to replace. You can fake wallpaper, though, by using a stencil to paint a wallpaper-like pattern onto your wall. Depending upon your skill set, stenciling a pattern onto the wall may be even easier than hanging real wallpaper anyway. This way, you can enjoy the look of wallpaper, and then just paint over your pattern when it is time to move. Your landlord will be none the wiser.
