Best Dressed Celebrities of 2011

By Stacy Copeland , last updated December 30, 2011
Whether dressed for the red carpet or out running errands, the best dressed celebrities of 2011 struck a balance between daring and elegant, never playing it safe but never becoming garish. At the end of each year, celebrity watchers and fashionistas eagerly await the best-dressed lists in major fashion magazines like Vogue and Glamour. 2011 saw a wide range of celebrity fashion, from Lady Gaga's outrageous Alexander McQueen hoof shoes to Chloe Sevigny's leopard-print caftans. The following celebs appeared repeatedly on the lists in 2011.
Cate Blanchett

ActressCate Blanchett, a perennial favorite on best dressed lists, looked stunning as usual in 2011. Blanchett often chooses white or ivory dresses for special events, which give the porcelain-skinned celebrity an angelic glow. She appeared at the Sydney, Australia opening of a new Louis Vuitton store in a resplendent white lace knee-length dress, which she paired with simple white pumps and loose, shoulder-length hair. Blanchett often appears in fashions by Giorgio Armani, and this year she looked stunning in his crimson flared jacket and pencil skirt. Always one to match her accessories, she paired the outfit with red pumps, earrings and a small red clutch.

Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis, in the spotlight after her brilliant performance in Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," appeared on the cover of the September 2011 issue of Glamour UK. She wore an eye-catching mini-dress from the Versus Fall 2011 collection that featured a bold pattern of black and blue triangles and a wide black and brown striped belt. But perhaps her best look of 2011 was her lavender Oscar Gown by Elie Saab. The chiffon and lace confection featured a plunging neckline, layered skirt and long train. She kept her hair and accessories simple and elegant, with a glamorous updo, an understated diamond bracelet and earrings, and a delicate white clutch. For this year's SAG award, Kunis chose another gauzy, ethereal gown, this time a red-and-white Alexander McQueen print gown with a thin, transparent belt. Accessories were simple once again, with the centerpiece being a Cartier tiger bracelet.
Kate Middleton

Royal bride Kate Middleton burst onto the fashion scene in 2011 when she married Prince William of Wales. The world first fell in love with her in the lacy cobalt blue Issa dress she wore when she announced her engagement. Her classic white wedding gown, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, also featured a lace bodice with a V-neckline and long lace sleeves. Kate continued to make striking fashion choices for public appearances, such as the strappy silver Amanda Wakeley gown she wore to a benefit for Prince Charles' charity Kind Direct and the bold red Beulah London gown she chose for a Child Bereavement Charity gala.

Style authority Vogue named longtime trendsetters Emma Stone, Michelle Williams, Victoria Beckham, Kirsten Dunst and Anne Hathaway to its best dressed list, rounding it out with two younger stars, Miuccia Prada’s and Marc Jacobs’ muse Elle Fanning and 14-year-old Chloe Moretz. Seventeen gave the boys a nod, choosing Taylor Lautner, Justin Bieber, Josh Hutcherson, Robert Pattinson and Bruno Mars. One thing's for sure, though, whether you're male or female, sticking with established designers and keeping the accessories simple are the keys to finding yourself on the best dressed list for 2012.
