The Best Gas Powered Lawn Mowers

By Elliott Kuhn , last updated February 10, 2011

Today’s gas powered motors have come a long way from their non-motorized predecessors. Lawn mowers are one of those ubiquitous components of the modern home. Every home seems to have a lawn, and every lawn needs a good cut. There are many makes and models of gas-powered mowers on the market, so search around, but here are three industry leaders with different strengths and features.

If you are considering gas-powered mowers, the number one name brand for many years has been Honda. Their new Honda HRX is another award winning mower. It has received accolades not only from consumer reviews, but also in professional comparison tests. The HRX is available in all 50 states, and even meets the strict emission regulations of California. There is a lifetime warranty on its rustproof deck, and a five-year warranty on the overall mower. Also, with this self-propelled mower, you can control what percent of your cuttings are bagged and what percent are mulched

The next front-runner is the Toro Recycler 20332. This mower has the unique capability of adapting its speed to the walking pace of the operator. This model is a good midrange choice, which will deliver well, without emptying your wallet. It is able to mulch and bag clippings as well as its more expensive competitors. It comes with an easy cleaning port for quick under deck access, and at a 22-inch blade coverage, it makes quick work of even big jobs. One drawback is that it does not meet California’s emission standards, although there is a Carb-certified version (a little hard to find outside of California—but the Internet can provide some vendor names).

Perhaps the self-propelled mower is not something you absolutely need, and if that is the case, the Lawn-Boy 10645 is a great option. It is studded out with a four-cycle OHV engine, and like the Honda HRX, it meets California emission standards. Lawn-Boy does offer a non-carbed version of this mower, 10640, but it is a little more polluting. This mower is capable of mulching with the best of them, and supports an optional discharge shoot.
