Simon Spurr

If there’s one trench that has had everyone talking at New York’s Fashion Week for Spring 2012, it was the hybrid trench/biker jackets at Simon Spurr.  While the silhouette (done in navy or camel cotton) was decidedly classic, the contrasting leather or cotton sleeves gave the trench an edgy twist.

Burberry

If contrasting sleeves done in ribbed leather is too avant-garde for you, check out some high-end classics with subtle updates from the originator of the trench coat, Burberry.  Go for traditional styles done in coated cotton or try a durable twill with a chic leather detailing at the cuff and collar from Burberry Brit.  Looking for something that makes a little more of a statement?  The oversized gabardine car coat with sunny, mackintosh-yellow leather trim from Burberry Prorsum will catch everyone’s eye on a dreary day, and the classic cotton trench from Burberry London gets a bit of an update in terms of color rather than cut: it is available in chicly urban mid-gray or more adventurous asparagus green and dark pomegranate.

Dior Homme

If a long, belted trench is too retro for your tastes, but bright colors or contrasting sleeves are a bit too modern, Dior Homme has a trench that’s just right for you, Mr. Goldilocks.  Done in waterproof cotton toile in a classic stone hue, this shorter version of a classic trench hits right about mid thigh for a subtler silhouette, but boasts all the timeless details of the original so you know it will last you for several seasons.

Ralph Lauren

Those that are looking for a coat that bridges the gap between modern and classic (but don’t want to spend thousands of dollars getting it) should have a look at the nylon/poplin blend trench from Ralph Lauren.  The dark navy tones down the classic eight-button silhouette, and a detachable throat latch and hood make this coat as functional as it is stylish.  Wear it with the belt for a traditional look or without for something more casual.

Abel Brown

Classic and traditional gets a youthful upgrade in this cool cropped version of a trench from Abel Brown. Hitting at the hip, this trench coat has all the cachet of the original but the shorter style makes it considerably more wearable for those whose day-to-day dress isn’t exactly a three-piece suit.  Best of all?  It’s priced well under $100.00.  Available in navy or khaki brushed cotton micro-twill exclusively at Urban Outfitters.

Zara

Another reasonably priced trench option that’s also a bit more on the casual side is the rugged looking raincoat from Zara.  Done in mid-tone, chocolaty brown, this silhouette is a sort of a hybrid blazer/trench, with extra zippered pockets to tote all your technology.
