The Best Natural Hair Products

By Sakai Blue , last updated May 14, 2011

Once upon a time, long, long ago, natural hair products were the exclusive domain of former hippies and great grandmamas. If you mentioned that you conditioned your hair with beer, you were met with disdainful and scornful looks. Today, you can’t find a hair product that doesn’t emphasize its all natural ingredients. If you can’t afford some of the high-end hair products infused with natural ingredients, add in the natural ingredients yourself.

Vegetable Glycerin

Pure vegetable glycerin is a Godsend for hair that lacks moisture. It is a humectant so it draws moisture out of the air and into your hair strands. Many people who have tried a million products to combat dry hair only to be let down an hour after applying it are amazed when they apply pure vegetable glycerin to their hair. It can keep previously dry hair soft and pliant for an entire day (usually longer). It’s often mixed with water to create the perfect balance of water and humectant. If you live in an area where there is a lot of humidity in the air, you can apply it as often as needed. In areas where there are periods of very low humidity, you may want to adjust the amount of glycerin you use. It may suck water out of your hair if it’s lacking in the air. If that's the case, seal it with an emollient to make sure that the moisture remains in your hair.

Shea Butter

This wonderful butter functions as an emollient. Emollients coat the hair strand, sealing in moisture so that it remains within the strand. Shea butter is perfect for people with curly hair, which has difficulty retaining moisture. To truly enjoy the benefits of shea butter, moisturize the hair first, and then seal it with the shea butter. It works on dry skin the same way that it works on hair, so after using it on your hair, use it on your skin.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Virgin coconut oil is like an elixir from the heavens for dry hair. Loaded with fatty acids, coconut oil doesn’t just sit on top of your hair, but actually penetrates the hair shaft, keeping it lush and soft, and preventing valuable protein loss. It's also extremely beneficial when used as a skin softener to combat dry skin.
