Thanksgiving represents a great time to volunteer your time as there are many non-profit organizations that can use your help. This is especially true if you live in or around Boston, and knowing the best places to volunteer in Boston will show you just how many volunteer opportunities are out there for you to choose from. Thanksgiving is a great time of the year to give back to those less fortunate. As you are sitting around your feast this holiday, you will feel a greater sense of goodwill knowing you helped others. Boston is the closest major city to where the pilgrims landed, so there could not be a more fitting place to volunteer this Thanksgiving. There are several great organizations in Boston that offer meals, as well as clothing and other services, to those in need on and around Thanksgiving Day. Here are a few ways you can get involved in Boston this year!
Loaves and Fishes is a food pantry that offers an amazing Thanksgiving meal for those who cannot afford their own food. This is a small charity organization and, because of the large turnout, Loaves and Fishes asks for as many volunteers as they can get to help set up or serve food at the event. This is a great way to donate time early in the day if you have it free before you head home for your own meals. The event takes place at Harvard Square at the First Church. Visit Loavesfishespantry.org for more details on how to get involved.
This event is put on to help raise money for the Greater Boston Food Bank, GBFB. The GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in the New England area. They help feed over 545,000 people a year thanks in large part to donations, food drives, and financial contributions. For the 5th straight year, in collaboration with Harpoon Brewery, they are putting together a Thanksgiving meal in barbeque style. This will be a feast with more than 500 pounds of turkey, as well as a lot of beer from the brewery. The money generated from this event will go to the GBFB. Of course they can use a lot of help with this event as it is quite large. It is also a tremendous amount of fun and something everybody gets to enjoy. The beer-b-que takes place on November 13th at Harpoon Brewery at 306 Northern Avenue. Feel free to contact the brewery or the GBFB for more information.
Every year the Greater New England Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society puts on a 5k run on Thanksgiving to help raise money for the society. This is a great way to go out and do something healthy before your hefty meal and to also help out with a great cause. There are many ways you can get involved. You can become a runner and raise money. You can also volunteer on the day of the race by helping out with the set up and organization of the race. This is a lot of fun and is really something worthwhile to look into. To learn more about this opportunity, call 1-800-344-4867.
