Best Scholarships for Minority Students

By Joseph Boyle , last updated October 22, 2011

There are a wide variety of scholarships of varying sources and types, available for minority students. Common scholarship types are provided for African American students, Native American students, and Hispanic students, along with many more. Minority scholarships are arranged in a myriad of ways. Some are targeted toward specific minority groups, while others have a much broader focus and are open to students from any underrepresented minority group. Indeed, for many of the available scholarships, students need not even be American citizens. Below is a short list of some of the best minority scholarships available.

Gates Millennium Scholars

The Gates Millenium Scholars program was funded with help from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help increase the numbers of minority students (including African-Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and Hispanic Americans) enrolling in university programs. The Gates Millennium Scholars program has a relatively large eligible age/grade level range, from high school seniors, to undergraduate students of all grades, and even to graduate students. The program supports 1,000 new students every year with the main requirement that students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 in order to be eligible for application.

T-Mobile/UNCF Internship & Scholarship Program

This scholarship program provides funding up to $4,500 annually for selected students and it includes an invitation to a 10 to 12 week summer internship. Requirements include a GPA of at least 2.5, high school junior grade level status, and a 2 page essay detailing how the scholarship will help the student achieve his or her goals.

NACME, Inc.

This is the largest source of private funding for minority students with a focus in engineering. Annually NACME helps to provide funding to over 1,500 students from an African American, Latino or Native American background. The scholarships provided may be anywhere from $2,500 to full funding, with the possible inclusion of a wide number of other benefits.
