Best Weedeater Trimmers

By J.W. Carpenter , last updated August 3, 2011

Weedeater is a popular brand of string trimmers manufactured by Poulan. With a range of models and designs built primarily for home lawn care, Weedeater trimmers are relatively lightweight, durable, and easy to use. Weedeater trimmers are available in gas, corded electric, and cordless electric models to meet the needs of most homeowners.

String trimmers are an essential yard maintenance tool, useful for taking down tall grass and getting into corners and edges that the mower can’t reach. Weedeater trimmers are designed for use with polymer trimming line, widely available at hardware stores and garden centers. The polymer line is fixed to a trimmer’s cutting head, providing a knife-like cut when powered at full spinning speed. The durability of the trimming line depends primarily on what type of vegetation is being cut. Unlike other trimmers built for professional or heavy duty uses, Weadeater trimmers are not compatible with polymer cutting blades, which are designed to slice through heavy vegetation. Weedeater trimmers, however, are excellent machines for trimming grass and weeds around the house.

Gas Weedeaters

Among the gas Weedeater trimmers, two stand out. For users that primarily intend to regularly trim grass along walkways and around planters, the FL20 model is an excellent choice. With the lightest weight of the gas powered mowers at under 12 pounds, the FL20 is equipped with a small but powerful 20cc 2-cycle engine. It features a curved shaft for comfortable upright use in open landscapes. The machine is equipped for .065 inch diameter polymer trimming line, which is best suited for trimming turf grasses. Note that .065 diameter line will degrade quickly when cutting thick, overgrown grasses or heavy vegetation. The FL20 features the Weedeater Tap ‘n Go trimming head. This trimming head allows the user to pre-load a spool of trimming line, to be slowly fed out as needed over time.

The FLSST25 Featherlite trimmer is built for heavier duty use than the FL20. It is well-suited to taking down tall overgrown grasses and some vegetative growth, in addition to trimming grass turf. Though relatively lightweight at about 13 and one-half pounds, the FLSST25 features a powerful 25cc 2-cycle engine and an extra-long straight shaft. The straight shaft is excellent for use in tight spots and underneath decks or low tree limbs. This machine is equipped for use with heavier gauge .080 inch polymer cutting line. Additionally, the FLSST25 features a Tap ‘n Go trimming head configured for two trimming lines. With two strands of heavy cutting line, this machine makes fast work of overgrown grass and weeds.

Electric Weed Eaters

The RTE115C electric trimmer is an electric alternative to the FL20, great for edging and cleaning up overgrown turf grass. With a 4.5 amp electric motor, the RTE115C weighs in at only six and one-half pounds, far less than the gas powered models. This machine uses .065 inch polymer trimming line, which is loaded into the Centrex automatic feed head. The RTE115C also features the handy Twist-N-Edge configuration, which pivots the cutting head for easy use as an edger. This is a great lightweight model, but it does require a nearby electricity outlet for use.
