Best Women's Shoes for Cross Training

By Anne Counter , last updated May 25, 2011

A good pair of women's sneakers is vital if you want to begin a cross training routine. Cross training is a training regimen that incorporates several different types of exercise.  For example, people who do triathlons are cross training because they run, swim and bike. If you are using the recumbent bike and the elliptical machine at the gym, then technically you are also cross training. Cross training could even describe an exercise routine where you combine a cardio exercise like running with a strength building exercise like weight lifting. You could say that cross trainer sneakers are sneakers that are built for all around use. This would be in contrast to running shoes or weight lifting shoes, which are each built specifically for one purpose.

Did you know that exercising in the wrong shoes can actually lead to injuries? Running shoes need to be flexible if you do not want to injure your ankles, where as usually basketball shoes need extra ankle support. Walking shoes, on the other hand, have more cushion and are not made for jumping or heavy impact. If you plan to do all sorts of exercises or attend an aerobics class in your sneakers, you need a pair of cross trainers.

Avia A1433

Avia is best known for making running shoes, but they also make a great cross trainer. The A1433 is perfect for your aerobics class because it features extra cushioning in the heel and side to side stability. This side to side stability is necessary for dance or aerobics because you will be moving in zig zags and lunges. You will not find this type of support in a plain running shoe. The A1433 also has a flexible sole, though, so you can still wear this shoe if you do plan to go running. For comfort, this shoe features a mesh upper that will allow heat to escape so that your feet do not get too hot during your workout.

New Balance 1010

New Balance's 1010 cross trainer features a wrap around lace that is specifically designed to give your feet side support when you jump from side to side. The shoe has a structured, web supported upper and extra side support on the sole so that your feet will not rotate inside the shoe. These shoes are also appropriate for running. They are exceptionally lightweight and will wick moisture away from your foot as you run.
It is important for you to remember that your cross training shoe is designed to be versatile. If should have multi purpose outsoles, low profile midsoles and durable, breathable uppers. These shoes are designed to meet the basic stability, durability, cushioning and comfort needs of a wide variety of sports and activities, both indoors and out. Cross training shoes are not recommended by podiatrists and sports therapists for serious running routines, however. If you spend 20 minutes per day running on the treadmill and then move on to another exercise, cross trainers are for you. If you run five miles every morning, however, get yourself a pair of running shoes.
