Best Zero Turn Lawn Mowers

By J.W. Carpenter , last updated January 30, 2012

Zero turn lawn mowers are the most efficient riding mowers on the market. With faster speeds than conventional riding mowers and exceptionally wide cutting decks, no other residential mower can complete the job in less time. Additionally, zero turn lawn mowers feature independently controlled rear wheels, which allows zero-radius turns and easy maneuvering around flower beds, garden borders, trees, posts, or any other common yard obstacle.

Especially well-suited to expansive yards, but fit for any size lawn, zero turn mowers take much of the work out of lawn maintenance. Many major yard equipment manufacturers offer zero turn lawn mowers. However, when shopping for the best mower, begin by looking at companies who have a reputation for durable, quality products and solid warranties, such as Husqvarna, Craftsman, and John Deere.

Husqvarna

The Husqvarna Homeowner Series of zero turn lawn mowers includes well over 20 models. At the lower end of the scale, the RZ3016 is a great entry level mower suited to medium-large lawns. It has a 16.5 horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine that provides adequate power and a somewhat narrow cutting deck measuring 30 inches. For more expansive lawns, the MZ6128ZT gets you about twice the cutting width (61 inches) at just over twice the price. This model also has a larger 28 horsepower engine and is designed for comfort.

Craftsman

Craftsman offers two well-appointed zero turn mowers, one for lighter home work and one for heavier use. The smaller model (#28986) has a 21 horsepower Platinum Series Briggs & Stratton engine and a 42-inch cutting deck that will have no problem mowing big yards. The larger Profession Series model (#28875) is outfitted with a heavy duty 26 horsepower ELS V-Twin Briggs & Stratton engine and a 52-inch cutting deck. Designed for comfort, this model will race through even the most expansive lawn mowing jobs.

John Deere

John Deere EZtrak Series zero turn mowers come in a variety of configurations to meet most residential mowing needs. With high-capacity mowing decks up to 62 inches in width, powerful V-Twin John Deere engines, and a 4-year standard warranty on mast models, the EZtrak Series is quite attractive. Additionally, many models are outfitted with full-backed, padded seats for a comfortable ride.
