Building a Wood Arbor

A wooden arbor is a beautiful structure to add to any garden. You can hang flowering vines on it or even grow vegetables and fruits over it. If you have good skills with tools, you can build your own arbor in your free time.

First, you should decide on a location in your yard for your arbor. It can serve as an entryway to your garden or be inside the garden itself.

Once you've selected your spot, you will want to make a trip to your local home improvement store to obtain all the necessary materials you will need. Cedar is a great choice for building an arbor or other outdoor wooden structure, as it is strong and resilient to weather conditions. 2x4 pieces may be all you will need for the body of the arbor.

Decide on a size for the arbor and use a square to frame it to ensure the corners are at a 90-degree angle from one another. Then, attach four additional wood pieces to serve as posts, which you can install in holes in the ground. Apply a concrete mixture through the holes to keep the arbor's feet secured into place. Make sure they remain vertical as well.

Use additional pieces of wood to encase the tops of the posts, and use 2x6 slats to secure the sides of them. Attach these to the posts with rust-proof screws by way of a drill.

Use a table saw to create grooves at the ends of additional 2x6 pieces as decoration. These will serve as beams and slats that will be installed at the top of the arbor, with crosspieces installed in addition. Make sure to securely affix these pieces into place by boring holes with your drill and then securing screws.

Once everything is constructed, you should add a wood varnish to protect the arbor. This will give the structure added stability and extra protection against weather conditions such as rain, snow and extreme heat.
