Buying Clothes During a Weight Loss Program

By Shannon C , last updated November 11, 2011

While it can feel great when your weight loss program begins to show positive results, there can be a point where your dilemma then becomes finding clothing that fits you at your new slimmer size.

Buying clothes during a weight loss program can thus feel problematic, because you don't want to blow your clothing budget on "transitional" clothing, but you also don't want to keep wearing clothing that no longer fits. So while budget-wise it can be tempting to simply slip back into the old larger clothing that you are used to wearing, experts state that this is not the right path to encourage you in your new, healthier direction. Rather, you should have a plan in place, both for weight loss motivation and positive anticipation, for replacing your too-big clothing with slimmer new and attractive wardrobe items.

The first step is to notice when you are losing weight, and strategically buy just a few new pieces to tide you over on your way to your ideal size. An alternative to this approach is to pick out a few favorite outfits from your "bigger" wardrobe and have them altered to fit you in your new slimmer incarnation. However, when you reach your new ideal weight, you will not want your "fat" clothes hanging around to remind you of where you came from, so you should be prepared to make an investment in new clothing as a part of your weight loss program.

This can be an important incentive in working towards and maintaining your new healthier eating and lifestyle habits. Finally, when you have reached your ideal goal weight and are ready to shop for your new wardrobe, be sure to take a friend with you who can lend a fresh pair of eyes and help you pick out fun new fashions you can really enjoy wearing.
