Common Uses for Shop Vacs

By Jonathan Bales , last updated April 14, 2011

A shop vac is the epitome of a product that languishes in obscurity after being purchased. They seem like a great idea at the time, but then sit untouched in a basement for years. There are plenty of uses for shop vacs, however, if you know how to apply them. Listed below are a few clean-up projects for which a shop vac is perfect.

Clean Your Car

A shop vac is ideal for cleaning dirt and dust out from your car. You can reach all of the corners inside of your car and trunk, leaving you with a spotless vehicle in no time.

Remove Water From Your Basement

Mops and brooms are useless for big spills or leaks in your basement. Simply switch your shop vac onto the "wet" setting and scoop up the water in the same time it would take you to vacuum any other floor.

Clean Your Pool

Using a shop vac to rid your pool of leaves and other debris can not only save you a bunch of time, but it will also save you from needing to purchase an expensive pool cleaner.

Create Vacuum-Sealed Containers

You can create homemade airtight containers by sucking the air out of a trash bag. Simply fill the bag with items such as clothing and let the shop vac go to work.

Clean Your Fireplace

If you have ever cleaned a fireplace, you know removing all of the ashes and soot is a time-consuming task. Ditch the shovel and broom, and simplify the job with a shop vac.

Drain Your Fish Tank

Skip the hose and drain your fish tank, or anything else you would like, with a shop vac.

Unclog Your Sink

Many people waste a ton of cash on plumbers or expensive cleaning materials to unclog a blocked sink, but the shop vac is often able to solve your problems for much less money.
