Creative Backyard Swing Set Ideas

By Elizabeth Hannigan , last updated April 6, 2011

Even a tire hanging from a tree makes a fun backyard swing set for most kids, but if you are interested in building something a bit more creative then there certainly is no shortage of options out their for you. From swing sets shaped like castles to swing sets specifically designed to provide your kids with the most mental stimulation and exercise possible, there are hundreds of types of prefabricated swing sets on the market. If you are like most parents, your number one priority is your kids' safety. Fortunately, modern swing sets are thoroughly tested and both kid and parent approved.

Swing Castles

The swing set you played on as a kid probably looked like some rubber scraps hanging from some wooden or metal posts by chains. Today's swing sets are way more spectacular. You can buy swing sets that look like fairy tale castles or pirate ships. These swing sets have all of the fun equipment that your kids are expecting, such as swings, slides and monkey bars, but they look more like they belong on a movie set than in your backyard. These new sets also come in a rainbow of colors and materials. You can get a pink fiberglass swing set that features your kids' favorite doll or a wooden swing set that looks like it houses the Swiss Family Robinson.

Tree Houses

Speaking of the Swiss Family Robinson, why not get your kids a swing set that includes some type of tree house or fort? A tree house or fort might not provide your kids with as much physical exercise as some gymnasts' rings, but it would be a great place for your kids to build their imaginations. A tree house will give your kids their very own small space to decorate and lord over. They can turn the space into a clubhouse or even camp out in the space if the fort is big enough. If you have ever given your kids a cardboard box big enough for them to fit into, you already know that kids love the idea of having their very own real estate. Your kids can pretend that their fort is their castle, their business or even their own home.

Home Made Swing Sets

If you are particularly handy, consider building your rug rats their very own custom-made swing set that your family designs together. That way, your kids can get exactly what they want. You can also design and paint the swing set to look really cool; you could choose a floral motif and paint the swings to look like they are garlanded with flowers or you could choose a jungle motif and decorate the swing set with exotic plants and animals. You don't have to build the swing set completely from scratch if you are an amateur handyman. You can get swing set kits that come in pieces that can be fitted together to create the swing set your kids are dreaming of. Your kids may have as much fun helping to design the swing set as they have actually playing on it.
