For a simple do-it yourself -room divider, you could hang curtains from the ceiling between living spaces. You could hang a rod from your ceiling to put the curtain on or put up ceiling hooks for the curtain to hang from. To prevent a darkening feel in the room use translucent or light colored curtains. This will give rooms separation, but still allow light to spread from room to room keeping a feel of spaciousness. You can also make a screen divider yourself. To do this, purchase multiple planks of wood, glass, or metal that you can attach together. You can decorate your planks however you would like. You could use chalkboard paint to make it a place for doodling or notes. You could attach family photos. At a hardware store you will need to find hinges to match. When attaching the hinges be sure to attach the hinges on opposite sides for each pair of planks so that your screen will be able bend and fold as you would like.
