Decorating with black bamboo is a stylish and environmentally friendly way to dress up your home, and black bamboo can be particularly elegant. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth. As such, it is a quickly renewable resource that makes for a great alternative to other, slower growing types of timber. Bamboo also requires almost nothing in the way of dangerous pesticides, so bamboo groves are less likely to cause pollution. If saving the environment is not a persuasive enough reason to decorate with black bamboo, the fact that bamboo farms help small, struggling, third world farmers increase their quality of life should be. You can pick up black bamboo for your household at home and garden stores or design shops.
There are three types of decorative black bamboo. The most expensive is Phyllostachys nigra, natural black bamboo. This bamboo grows in China and Taiwan and is imported into the United States. The plant sprouts green, then grows to 25 to 40 feet and naturally turns ebony black when it is about three years old. This plant is very beautiful and would make a great live decoration in your home. Although the stalks turn a rich, dark black, this bamboo continues to sprout bright green leaves. If you are looking for a type of black bamboo to decorate your yard, black bamboo is an excellent choice. This species of bamboo will cost you more than ordinary green bamboo, though. That is because there is a lower demand for it and therefore less is imported into the United States.
The second type of decorative black bamboo household items are regular, green bamboo things which have been painted black. A lot of inexpensive black bamboo furniture is actually regular bamboo with a coat of black paint. In fact, if you find a bamboo picture frame or chair that you like, you can paint it black yourself with some spray paint. Paint will give the bamboo a uniform, opaque coat of black color. You will not be able to see any of the grain or nuances of the bamboo, but sometimes you don't want to see that kind of stuff. If you like the idea of using environmentally friendly timber, but aren't crazy about the look of bamboo, a coat of black paint may be the solution for you.
The third way to get black bamboo stuff for your house is to buy regular bamboo things, then stain them black. If you are successful with your staining project, your regular bamboo should look just like natural black bamboo. You can save money and get the exotic look you want. Staining bamboo black can be pretty labor intensive though. You will have to sand your bamboo furniture or picture frame, then apply at least three even coats of black stain. Once the stain is dry, you will have to coat the bamboo in a varnish in order to seal the stain and prevent it from rubbing off onto your clothing or walls. Once your bamboo is stained, it will be black but you will still be able to see some of the natural nuances of the wood.
Either the authentic black bamboo or the painted bamboo will add a touch of class and elegance to your home. Use throughout your house as furniture or accessories and you will thoroughly enjoy the style and sophistication it adds.
