Decorating with Black Kitchen Cabinets

If your kitchen design is looking a little dated, you can achieve a much more modern look by decorating with black kitchen cabinets. This look can be achieved either by replacing your cabinets or, more simply and inexpensively, by painting your cabinetry black. Here you will get ideas as to how to achieve this and to get that new, fresh, modern kitchen look for which you have been seeking.

Black cabinets are much more dramatic than the traditional white ones. But like white, black is a neutral color and will go with any color them you have in your back splash, counter tops, or floor tiles. By choosing to paint your cabinets black, you will be creating a modern or contemporary styling theme that you will have to carry out throughout your kitchen.

These design themes require simplicity. You might want to eliminate the cabinet pulls and any other hardware on your doors altogether. Another option is to buy cabinet hardware that runs the length of your doors. This is more expensive but long, thin door pulls are consistent with a modern style.

Black is the strongest color for creating contrast. As a result, any other strong colors that you bring to your kitchen will now jump out and create a focal point. This would apply to any strong colors that are part of your backsplash or countertop designs.

If you want to add china cabinets, get black doors that have glass centers. For a modern design, use sleek frosted glass. Light the cabinets inside. Your china will gleam against the black and glass and add beauty and luster to your kitchen decor.

The black cabinets will darken your kitchen so that you might have to compensate by adding under counter lights. Look for other ways to break up the black masses of color. Kitchen appropriate art work or displaying brightly colored appliances such as blenders or stainless steel microwaves or toaster ovens can add brightness and contrast to your design. You might want to create a rack from which you can hang brightly colored cookware. All of these techniques will balance off the black and contrast with the sense of minimalism.

If your taste is more traditional, you can still use black cabinetry. Just sand down the edges and allow the wood grain to show through to create a more country look. If you add glass centers, do them as traditional windowpanes. You can install crown molding on top of your kitchen. And for the more traditional look, keep your kitchen walls and floor tiling white.

Black cabinetry also creates an air of elegance to your kitchen. If you want to amplify this you can do so by upgrading your lighting either to a very modern overhead style or even to an elegant mini chandelier style. You will have a wide variety from which to choose.

So by simply painting your cabinets black, you are opening up a whole new and cost effective approach to re-doing your kitchen and making it a more exciting and interesting place to cook and for the family to gather.
