Decorating a Harry Potter Theme Bedroom

By Sarah Brodsky , last updated August 18, 2011

Kids who are bored with the usual sports- and princess-themed bedroom accessories might be more excited about decorating their bedrooms with a Harry Potter theme. More than ten years after the first book in the Harry Potter series was published, fans of all ages continue to be enthralled by the young wizard and his schoolmates. It's easy to bring elements of J.K. Rowling's imaginative stories into a living space. Here are some Harry Potter-themed items that will give a bedroom a magical touch.

Decals

The RoomMates set of Harry Potter decals available from Amazon lets you recreate scenes from Harry's adventures on any bedroom wall. The set features images of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, plus wizard hats and Quidditch brooms. Also included are owls, scrolls, and school seals. The decals can be peeled off and reapplied, which is a plus for those who want to experiment with different configurations or to rearrange a room.

Bedding

There are plenty of Harry Potter-themed bedspreads and blankets for sale, although not all of them look equally authentic. Some are designed to resemble movie advertisements rather than anything Harry Potter himself would have kept on his bed. A good choice for decorators who want to stay true to the story line is a throw pillow with the Hogwarts crest (also available from Amazon.com). This pillow will make a bedroom feel like it's one of the rooms in Harry Potter's own dormitory.

Sorting Hat

A magic hat told Harry Potter and the other Hogwarts students which house they would join. You can add some school spirit to a bedroom by placing a sorting hat on a bookcase or shelf. A Sorting Hat available from Amazon.com has a mouth you can move to act out the house-assignment scene. A secret pocket inside allows kids to tell thier fortune.

Mirror of Erised

Mirrors are a standard feature of most bedrooms, but a room with a Harry Potter theme shouldn't contain just an ordinary mirror. It should display the Mirror of Erised, which Harry finds in the first book in the series. This mirror doesn't give an ordinary reflection; instead, it shows the Hogwarts students what they want most. You can turn any mirror into a magical mirror simply by spray-painting cardboard with gold paint and decorating the mirror with the gold border. An alternative idea is to apply this border to a bulletin board or a magnet board. Kids can then cover the board with images of their favorite things.
