Decorating with Japanese Floor Pillows

By Sunny Carr , last updated May 4, 2011

Japanese, or Asian floor pillows are easy to use in decorating. Japanese floor pillows combine style with functionality to help maximize the space in a room. Floor pillows have been used for dining, leisure and social occasions for thousands of years in the Far East. Prints and textures vary, but the role of Japanese floor pillows remains consistent. Floor pillows can be found to match just about any room décor.

Space

Japanese floor pillows are unusually oversized which means adequate space is needed in your room to house each pillow. Find a place outside of a walkway where the pillows can remain untouched until you are ready to use them. A corner of a living room opposite the door or in the center of a formal dining room is your best option when decorating a common area. Bedrooms are also a suitable place for floor pillows. Place pillows near a window or in front of a television where space permits.

Design

When searching through catalogues of modern furniture accessories, the options can start to dull with the constant use of muted colors. Instead of relying on accessories made for modern design, consider bringing an exotic touch to the room. Japanese floor pillows make a great contemporary accent to a room. However, when decorating with traditional furniture, floor pillows may clash.

Patterns

Japanese floor pillows are available in Asian prints and solid colors. The pillows you choose should blend well into the color palette of your existing space. Avoid the urge to purchase a decadent pillow for its unusual qualities without first considering where you will place it. Japanese floor pillows can be just the right touch you need to brighten your room or bring a terrible clash if not combined appropriately. Unless your room has an Asian inspired theme, solid colored pillows are your best option.
