Designing a Breakfast Nook

Having a breakfast nook in your home makes for a calm, pleasant place to relax, but designing your nook can be an agonizing process. Here are some tips to keep in mind so you can create a nook that you will enjoy to the fullest!

Breakfast nooks should be on the side or in the corner of your kitchen and, therefore, it is important that the two flow together in terms of style. Try implementing warmer colors into the nook for that nice, cozy feel. Even if your kitchen is purely white, fill your nook with a mixture of warm and neutral colors such as cream, beige, and light colors like peach. If your kitchen has a lot of darker tones, try filling your nook with a bright color, accented with its lighter shades and hints of gray. Colors aren't all that count, though. When designing your nook, stay consistent with the theme of your kitchen if it has one. For instance, if your kitchen design was inspired by the warm colors and rustic qualities of Tuscany, do not make the colors or style of your nook so sharp or ultra-modern.

Situating your nook next to a window is ideal so you can take in the scenery and sunlight, but the most important point to keep in mind is that this is your nook and it should make you feel comfortable! If windows are not a possibility, make sure to hang a small lighting fixture above the table or put a tall lamp in a corner that will provide adequate—but not too harsh—lighting.

Space will also need to be taken into consideration when putting your nook together. Cramming too much into one space runs the risk of being unsightly, and will ultimately result in a lack of comfort. Depending on how much space you have to work with, choose a small table that agrees with the style of your kitchen and still leaves room for two or more comfortable chairs and/or a loveseat. If space allows, go for a table with room for a small potted plant on top or at least a shelf on the bottom to hold your books and magazines.

Most importantly, indulge yourself in comfortable chairs or perhaps a loveseat with soft, colorful cushions to keep your nook a serene place for you to relieve yourself from the stresses of the day. Whether it's a cozy little place for two, a place for you to have coffee with friends or just a smaller area for you to relax on your own, there is nothing quite like the addition of a breakfast nook to your home.
