Designing Your Bathroom Floor Plan

Before you started building your own house, you may never have realized that things like designing your bathroom floor plan could be so complicated. You know that you need a sink, toilet and bathtub. It never occurred to you that there were so many ways to fit these things into such a small room, or that there were so many ways you could go wrong. Luckily for you, there are a few resources out there to help you with your latest project.

Work together with your architect and contractor. These guys have years of experience designing bathroom floor plans. They know exactly what works and what doesn't. If you are like most homeowners, you do not have an infinite amount of space to plan your bathroom in. There are probably a finite number of ways you can functionally lay the room out. You may save yourself some time and headaches if you just ask the architect and contractors working on your house what they can and cannot do. They might just give you two or three options to choose from. There may be factors that they are taking into account that you had never even thought of. Chances are, for example, that you are not a plumbing expert. Your experts will be able to help you design the most efficient bathroom possible. That is what you are paying them for, after all.

Play around with some free online tools. There are several websites that allow you to design your own floor plans, blue prints and drawings that can help you to envision your new bathroom. These websites are totally free and you do not have to enter any of your personal or contact information and you are under no obligation to buy anything. Carefully measure your bathroom or get ahold of the possible measurements for your bathroom if it doesn't exist just yet. Log onto one of these sites and design away, to your heart's content. You will be able to design your bathroom to scale on these sites, so there is no opportunity to underestimate how much space a bathtub takes up or accidentally place your vanity in front of a window. You can even add all of the actual fixtures you want to your designs on some sites. These sites are really fun and after you design your actual bathroom you can fool around a bit and design your dream bathroom.

Do not forget that doors need to open. The most common mistake people make when designing their own bathrooms is placing the toilet or vanity right in front of a door and thus partially blocking the door. You need to plan for any doors that open outwards to have enough space in front of them not only for the door but for you. The cabinet doors on your vanity will also need to open outwards, if you plan to store stuff under the vanity. Finally, you may also need to plan for shower doors that open outwards.
