The Diane von Furstenberg Style

By Emily Waterfield , last updated December 22, 2011

Diane von Furstenberg was founded in 1972 by the brand’s namesake. Starting out as a traditional American sportswear label, DVF has since grown into a global luxury brand. First entering the fashion scene with a suitcase full of jersey dresses, Miss von Furstenberg transformed the way women view and wear dresses. Introducing the brand’s iconic wrap jersey dress not two years after her arrival into luxury fashion, Diane von Furstenberg transformed women everywhere. Not only did her wrap dresses envelope women’s bodies in the perfect way, hugging their curves in all the right places, but these dresses came to embody power and freedom for an entire generation of women. By 1976, four years after beginning her long, idolized journey through the design world, Diane von Furstenberg sold over one million of her wrap dresses, earning her the cover of Newsweek Magazine.

By 1997, after a brief hiatus from fashion, Diane von Furstenberg solidified her place in the industry, even capturing significant global market-share as well. It was the effortless elegance of the wrap dress that catapulted her to fame. Women everywhere revered her as a fashion saint, sent to New York to empower and inspire women of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. The DVF brand has since been able to expand, adding four complete ready to wear collections per year, as well as accessories such as shoes, handbags, eyewear, and jewelry. In 2011, the brand introduced a collection of home furnishings to its superstar resume.

Feminine, bold prints are a signature of the DVF brand. Designed with a strong, modern, chic woman in mind, the Fall 2011 collection details a saucy woman who is not afraid to pioneer a world of louche garments and eye-catching prints. Featuring a fresh, modern take on the signature wrap dress, as well as beautifully fit and draped dresses in everything from metallic stripes to sheer mesh, and surprising pops of color and texture, the Fall 2011 collection defines the stake that DVF has within the fashion world. Bold, yet elegant, androgynous yet feminine, it is the juxtapositions that make DVF so popular. The design house takes style risks that modern women find unique, daring, and fun. A simple dress or a classic trench coat at DVF are anything but traditional. Utilizing the longevity that accompanies clean lines and classic cuts, Diane von Furstenberg introduces a kitschy cool factor to otherwise timeless clothes. She pushes the boundaries on tradition and redefines class and elegance. It is this extra element of surprise and wonder that draws a cult following to the DVF brand, and keeps it there for season after season, as the designer continues to introduce style that push the envelope.

The Hot Summer Nights collection is a great way to dive into summer. DVF has introduced easy, chic separates that are perfect for long summer days that transition into hot summer nights. Remaining true to the DVF aesthetic, the new summer arrivals play with fun, loud prints, billowing fabrics, and psychedelic accessories.

The Pre-Fall 2011 collection offers an easy transition from warm summer months into the looming days filled with an increasing chill. Moving from light jersey dresses in autumnal hues, that can be worn in their sleeveless bliss during the wavering days of summer, but easily transitioned into fall with a long cardigan, to the turtleneck knit dresses that signal the arrival of permanently cold weather. The rich shades that mimic the changing leaves during the fall season complement the khaki trench coats and cognac colored knee-high boots that are featured within the collection. The separate pieces themselves are timeless in nature, boasting sumptuous silks, luxurious cashmeres, and thick twills. The new arrival of scarves is also a perfect way to make the transition from summer to fall. Iconic DVF prints liven up the scarf collection, and lend a happy, warm air to a sundress that has been layered with stockings and a sweater, and needs the finishing touches to turn it into a fall appropriate look.

Diane von Furstenberg defines modern-day chic. Over the years, she has redefined what it means to be a woman, offering empowering, elegant, ready to wear pieces that have forever changed the way women approach fashion. A single jersey wrap dress has become an iconic image of the global brand, which has since experienced astronomical growth and expanded to include multiple collections of clothes and various lines of accessories.
