Dress for Thanksgiving on the Go

Dressing for Thanksgiving on the go requires pre-planning to get just the right combination of pieces for each event you will attend. In some families, people must travel to several homes for a quick Thanksgiving visit. Other families do charity work on Thanksgiving or simply keep a busy schedule that day. If your Thanksgiving life fits any of those scenarios, you should take the time to put together clothes that are practical for a Thanksgiving on the go.

Shoes

Pamper your feet! When your feet hurt, you are not going to enjoy yourself, and chances are that you will take some of your irritability out on your loved ones. Athletic shoes are the absolute most comfortable and supportive option. For people who cannot imagine a Thanksgiving outfit that works with cross trainers, opt for something like Mary Janes or flats with plenty of arch support. Your shoes should be the foundational piece of your wardrobe.

Pants and Shirt or Dress

Go with classics for this traditional family day. A nice pair of dress pants or a solid-colored skirt will work the best. With these pieces, anyone can fit in at any Thanksgiving dinner. Wearing classic attire for Thanksgiving on the go will allow you to make an appearance at your sister’s huge Thanksgiving brunch, where 12 kids and 4 dogs will be running around, as well as at your in-laws’ home for their formal mid-afternoon meal. For shirt and pants, try to go with common cuts that have a little pizzazz, such as a small ruffle along the lapel of a shirt or a nice boot-cut slack rather than something with a straight leg.

Accessories

Your accessories really can make the difference in your appearance. For something more casual, stick to a simple diamond stud earring with a nice bangle bracelet. Add an elegant necklace for something more formal or put on a scarf with matching handbag for a trendy day. Accessories are something that you can change out throughout the day as your situation dictates, and using them to make your clothing fit each activity is your best option.

Outerwear

Jackets and sweaters can be tough at Thanksgiving. Unless you are in the extreme north or south, your Thanksgiving weather could vary dramatically. Hedge your bets by bringing a light sweater or jacket with you. Get something that is wind-resistant in case you spend any time outdoors or in bad weather. Add a hat to your accessory list if you think that either rain or snow is possible. If the day is warm, you should be able to leave your jacket or sweater in the car without your clothing choice appearing incomplete. In other words, avoid suits with a matching jacket.

Whatever you pick to wear, know that fewer people are scrutinizing your clothing than you may imagine. The general rule of thumb is to dress slightly above what you think may be the standard attire for an affair to avoid being underdressed. For Thanksgiving, though, as long as you fit in with the general attire of the other guests, you will be fine.
