Your dog isn’t just a pet, he’s part of the family, unfortunately, he’s a part of the family that tends to shed all over your upholstery, rugs and clothes. Here are some tips that will help you pick up pet hair, be it canine or feline.
Of course, as the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention if worth a pound of cure. Try tackling the pet hair problem at the source: your pet. Regularly brush your pet to remove shedding hair. As he begins to shed his winter coat, get your dog a haircut in the spring. Keep your clothes stored in an area where the pet doesn’t have access.
For pet hair on your clothes, use a lint roller. You should be able to find them in the laundry detergent aisle of your local store. This simple device is just a roll of sticky paper with a handle. Rub the lint roller over your clothes and the pet hair will cling to the paper. When it’s saturated with hair, peel off that layer and a fresh new one is exposed. If you don’t have a lint roller then wrap packing or duct tape around your hand, sticky side out, and rub or press that against your clothes.
For furniture, get a pair of rubber or latex gloves. (Gardening gloves with a rubber palm will also work.) Rub your gloved hand back and forth over the fabric and the hair should cling to the glove. Try moistening the glove slightly – the water will weigh down the hair, making it easier to clump and pick up. Clean the glove off after each swipe, though, so you don’t just spread the fur around. (If you have silk upholstery, only use dry gloves –water will damage silken fabrics.) In a pinch, dampen just your hand and rub that along your clothes to remove stray hair.
Try using a fabric softener sheet, running it along rugs or furniture. Similarly, inflate a balloon and rub it against the fabric to create a shield of static. The fur should cling to the balloon instead of your carpeting.
And as with any tidy house, vacuum regularly. Research your vacuum purchase online to find what models pet owners think work best. Some full-size vacuum cleaners come with special pet hair attachments. There are also smaller handheld units designed just for removing pet hair, as well. Make sure the sofa is vacuumed and clean before you sit down and you won’t then have to remove pet hair from your clothes as well.
