The Essentials of Safari Style

By Laura Richter , last updated December 22, 2011

Wooden necklaces, muted colors, and jungle prints are some of the essentials of safari style. African safari outfits are sophisticated and practical. They exude adventure, celebrating wild animals and the earth. Safari clothing is usually made from cotton or linen. You can layer it without losing its style or soften it to avoid looking a costume-like appearance.

Earth Tones

People who take an African safari want to blend into their environment. They also want to stay cool during the day. To emulate the safari look, wear clothing made in muted colors, such as tan, olive or khaki. Occasionally, darker colors find their way into the palette. You may also see brown or green in duller tones.

People usually do not wear white on a safari, since it tends to stand out in most natural environments. It also shows dirt and dust easily. For fashionable safari style, you can incorporate the color in small amounts.

Shirts and Pants

Safari clothing comes in cotton or natural material that allows air to circulate. The shirts and pants fit loosely on the body, allowing for maximum movement. Despite its light material, safari clothing is durable. Shirts and pants have extra pockets to carry small items.

Some safari shirts can quickly transition into an evening outfit. Men can add a tie to vintage safari shirts for a dressier look. Women can accessorize the shirt with a scarf.

When wearing the safari style as a fashion statement, women can find clothing that flatters their figure. Some shirts are cut to accentuate an hourglass figure. Belts attached to the shirt call attention to the waist. You can find a shirt with or without pockets in the front. Cargo pants may have their pockets on the front or side of the leg.

Jackets and Layers

In keeping with traditional safari style, you can layer your clothes for warmth. It is also a way to soften the look. Add crewneck shirts and tank tops underneath the safari shirt. A large, button-down sweater over the shirt will give the outfit a bohemian appearance.

Like safari shirts, jackets come in different styles that will compliment a woman’s figure. Outerwear comes belted around the waist for a clean, crisp look. Epaulettes may help emphasize the shoulders. Some fashionable safari jackets look like unstructured trench coats.

Animal Prints and Accessories

For an authentic safari look, animal prints are usually kept to a minimum. You would not wear a leopard print shirt on a safari however stylish it may look. But as a fashion statement, you can break a few rules.

You can match animal print accessories with your ensemble. The earth tones in the safari palette go well with most designs. These accessories will also prevent your outfit from looking like a Halloween costume. Consider pairing the ensemble with animal print handbags, earrings, and bracelets.

As a tribute to African, you could wear necklaces from the continent. Simulated African amber beads, bone, and wooden elements make attractive additions to safari outfits. Painted clay beads and copper will also go well with the look. You can introduce a minimal amount of color through the right accessories.
