The Fendi Spy Bag

By Cole Quirk , last updated July 8, 2011

The Fendi Spy bag is one of the most sought after designer purses on the market. Celebrities and socialites have been toting the Spy bag down red carpets and Rodeo Drive since it was released in 2005, flaunting the "It" bag and solidifying its must have status. This bag gets its name from housing two to four secret compartments hidden throughout its interior, therefore making you work like a spy to figure out how to get into them. The number of secret compartments the bag has depends on which model it is. The Spy bag is easily recognizable from the outside with a soft slouchy unstructured body, short rounded double basket woven handles and a flap over the top with a metal front snap closure. While the patterns and materials may change with each season, the handles and top flap closure will always stay the same.

This bag is perfect for any outing and can hold all of your daily or nightly essentials. The Fendi Spy bag measures 17 inches wide, 11 inches high and 9 inches deep, meaning it can hold a lot without getting too heavy. The straps are small and can only be held in your hand or draped on your forearm, rather than placing it on your shoulder.

Spy bags typically start at $1000 and can skyrocket to the thousands depending on the materials used. The most popular Spy style is the solid colored leather bag that costs around $2,500. One of the most extravagant bags on the market is the pink limited edition alligator skin Spy, breaking the bank at over $25,000. Every season, Fendi changes up materials and designs used for their Spy bag. Each Fall or Spring during their runway show, Spy bags appear on the hands of most models. Other materials used on past Spy bags include corded or metallic textured leather, denim, sequins and velvet with satin interior lining.

There are many ways to insure that your Spy bag is a real Fendi and not a fake or knock off. On a real Spy bag, the Fendi name is engraved on the metal attached to the front strap. There is also a Fendi logo on the small pouch on the inside and a logo on a signature gold or silver plaque inside as well. Make sure the double letter F of the logo lines up perfectly; a slanted logo reveals a fake bag. A real Spy bag will have the serial number embroidered into the bag, while a fake will have it glue or sloppily written on the material. The threading used on the inside and outside of the bag will always be dyed to match the purse; therefore contrasting thread colors prove the bag to be an imposter.

Fendi Spy bags can be purchased at a Fendi retail store or at upscale department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue or Barney's New York. Online retailer Net A Porter also carries Fendi Spy bags, which occasionally go on sale. Check out Overstock.com for more discounted Fendi Spy bags, as well as Amazon.com.
