Fun Ideas for a Surprise 40th Birthday Party

These fun ideas for a surprise 40th birthday will make it an evening to remember. Turning 40 is a big milestone. Make it a surprise event to heighten the fun.

First, it’s important to keep the birthday celebrant in the dark so it’s a genuine surprise. Enlist friends to fool the person in question. Try to plan the party in advance of the actual day so the person won’t suspect anything. Say you’re having a small dinner party at your house. Or say you’re heading out for drinks but need to stop by someone else’s place to pick up something. Or book a private room at a restaurant and have your guests waiting. Make sure the partygoers park away from the house so their cars aren’t observed. Aim to get at least 40 guests there!

Celebrate the guest’s age, not with macabre decorations, but by making the party theme the year they were born. For those turning 40 in 2011 that means 1971 colors, themes and news events can help tailor your décor. Or go for the year they graduated from high school. Play hit songs from their youth. Play TV shows that were popular at the time on DVD. Ask guests to dress in their 1980’s finery.

Make sure there’s plenty of food and drink, especially those that cater to the tastes of the birthday boy or girl. Order or bake a special cake. Decorate it with a photo image of the birthday celebrant when younger. Or bake a 4 and a 0 cake and decorate with sprinkles and colored sugar. Make sure there are enough candles to blow out.

Plan for games and events. Consider hiring a magician, belly dancer or clown to keep things fun. Make it a casino night with card games. Pull out board games or play “Celebrity” or other party games. Keep the music and dancing going, if there’s room.
