Fun Quilting Projects for Christmas

When you think of Christmas, one thing that often jumps to mind is sitting around sipping hot beverages and working on crafty projects as a family. One type of craft that is great for the holidays is a quilt, which can keep you warm after you finish it. Work on a fun quilting project this Christmas to create an end product that you can enjoy for many years to come.

Family Quilt Squares

One fun project to work on as a family is to make a quilt with one or more squares designed by each family member. This type of quilt makes a perfect gift from kids to their mom or from grandkids to a grandmother. Give each family the task of creating a specific number of quilt squares of a set size, determining the number based on how many total squares you need to complete the size of quilt you will make. Family members can sew quilt squares if they have the ability, or just decorate them with fabric markers, puffy paints, iron-on transfers, cross stitching or other techniques. Combine the squares into a large quilt to give as a gift.

Christmas Tree Quilt

Rather than making a quilt with plain squares as the design, use strips of fabrics that look like branches on a Christmas tree. Inlay these with smaller pieces of decorative fabrics that look like Christmas ornaments for a final product that showcases a giant Christmas tree. Another idea is to make many small quilt squares, each with a different style of Christmas tree, and piece them together into a large quilt that showcases the variations on the holiday.

Smaller Projects

Quilting is not just about making large quilts. You can use the techniques to make many smaller projects that make great holiday gifts. For example, make a quilt share and turn it into a pot holder or frame it for a wall hanging. You can also make quilted slipcovers for pillows to decorate for the holiday. Quilted Christmas stockings are also cute and fun to make.
