Funny Halloween costumes are sometimes the best idea for younger trick-or-treaters. Being a little bit scared is often part of the fun of Halloween for older children, but for children who are still too young to understand that all those ghosts and goblins are really just people wearing rubber masks, it’s a relief to see some funny costumes that can make them laugh. Adults may also prefer a funny costume because they’ll be accompanying young children while trick-or-treating or attending a party with children or perhaps just because a funny costume fits their personality better – not everyone is into blood and gore!
Flip-Flop Costume
A flip-flop costume works well for a single person, a couple, a family, adults or children. You can make them any size you need and decorate them however you want. Make a flip-flop with a “shark bite” cut from the end or one with bubble gum made from pink tissue paper stuck to the bottom.
To make a flip-flop you’ll need a measuring tape, a large piece of cardboard, a pencil, scissors, two foam swimming pool “noodles,” hot glue, 2-inch wide ribbon and plenty of paint or paper for decorating the shoe.
Have the person you’re making the costume for lay down on a large piece of cardboard. Draw a flip-flop shape around them. The costume should start just below the knees, narrow at the arm pits and extend 12 to 20 inches above the head. Draw a circle around their head. Cut out the shape, including the head.
Decorate both sides of the shoe with paint, glitter, paper and glue or whatever supplies you have. Cut the foam noodles and hot-glue them onto the cardboard to represent the rubber thongs of the flip-flop. Place a large embellishment like a plastic flower where the two thongs meet at the top of the shoe. Cut two pieces of wide ribbon and glue them onto the back side of the shoe for the wearer to slide their arms into. Make sure the ribbon is attached securely as this is how the wearer will carry the costume.
Spaghetti and Meatballs Costume
Who doesn’t love a piping hot plate full of spaghetti and meatballs? Kids and adults who love spaghetti can be their favorite food for Halloween and get a lot of laughs. To make this costume you will need red tennis shoes, red sweat pants and sweat shirt, a red baseball cap, a metal colander, two mop heads, several 2-inch brown pompoms, a strip of self-stick hook and loop tape, hot glue and scissors.
Glue one mop head onto the red cap. Apply the strip of hook and loop tape to the center of the mop and press the colander firmly onto the cap/mop combination. Randomly glue brown pompoms on the mop strings to resemble meatballs twisted up in spaghetti. Cut hunks of string from the second mop head and glue them onto the red sweats; complete each tangle of “spaghetti” with a meatball or two. Don’t forget to embellish the sneakers with a dollop or two of spaghetti.
