If you have a small front room it can be a bit tricky to furnish the space so that the room is functional and welcoming. Your front room is probably the room you are most likely to entertain guests in, though, so you want to make it warm and inviting. Plus, the room has a great view of your front yard and your neighborhood. You want to be able to enjoy the space yourself as well.
Sitting Room
If you love to have people over, turn your small front room into a sitting room. Add a couch and a cocktail table if you can fit these items in your room and decorate with your favorite artworks and some plants. Tie the entire room together with a cool area rug. Don't feel like you need to go with washed out colors to make the space look bigger. You can decorate with your favorite bright, saturated shades. You can avoid making the room look cluttered by choosing two or three shades that look good together and sticking with these. Just make sure that you keep the space neat.
Study
If you actually don't ever entertain, then why would you turn your front room into a sitting room? You don't need to have a special room just for guests if you actually hate having guests. You can turn your small front room into your own personal study instead. Line the walls of your front room with bookcases that reach from the floor to the ceiling. Then add a beautiful desk, maybe a roll top if you like antiques or something in glass if modern's more your style, and a matching chair. Don't stop there. Add a couple of comfortable lounge chairs for you to sit in and read. You can decorate with framed maps or prints of stuff you're interested in.
