Get a "Mad Men" Haircut

By Elizabeth Hannigan , last updated January 11, 2012

AMC's series Mad Men has taken not only television but also the fashion world by storm, and you are probably not the first person to ask your hairdresser for a Mad Men inspired haircut. Starring Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, Elizabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser and January Jones, Mad Men follows early 1960s ad man Don Draper as he attempts to land huge accounts and seduce well-coiffed women. Since the show is set in the early '60s, all of the cast members wear haircuts appropriate to the time, meaning that all of the men wear very conservative, parted and slicked cuts like your grandfather might have worn, and all of the women wear elaborate 'dos that probably took them hours to achieve.

Mad Men

If you are a man and you want to copy Don Draper, Pete Campbell or Roger Sterling's haircut, the easiest thing you can do is to bring several pictures of your favorite character in to your hair dresser. If you are accustomed to shaving your head yourself or if for any reason you do not feel confident in your old hair dresser's abilities, find a new hairdresser by searching for one online where you can see pictures of examples of past work. Once you get your Mad Men haircut, you are going to have to put product in it everyday and probably get it trimmed on a monthly basis if you want to keep it looking nice.

Mad Women

Getting a Mad Men haircut won't be so easy if you are a women. The women of the 1960s did not just have good haircuts, they were also experts at using things like curlers, rollers and falls and would style their hair every morning. You can go to your hairdresser with a picture of your favorite Mad Men actress, but be aware that the look will probably only last you the night.
