Great Accent Ideas for a Rustic Living Room

By Holly Higgins , last updated April 1, 2011

The inviting ambience of a rustic living room can inspire hours of relaxation. Dark or crackled paint finishes, oversized paintings and a fireplace or decorative stove can add to the overall rustic feel of a living room, but it's important to have strong accents as well. These rustic accent pieces will add personality to your living room and create a cozy, complete feel.

Elegant Drapes

A great rustic living room can benefit from dark colors and masculine stylings. Consider hanging long, elegant curtains made of velvet or cashmere, which keep your home warm in the winter and have antique flair. If drapes aren't your thing, wood shutters can block out excess light and add old world charm just as well. For truly authentic window coverings, look in thrift or antique shops.

Scented Candles

Candlelight adds glow and character to a rustic room. Choose large candles in dark colors with heavy, woodsy scents like cedar, cinnamon or amber. Line candles of different heights on a mantle. Marble or copper candle stands will add even more of an old world touch to these accents. Better yet, place a bronzed antique mirror behind your candles to expand their glow even further.

Natural Chandelier

Not all chandeliers are made of expensive crystal. There are all kinds of natural chandeliers perfect for accenting a rustic living room, including styles made from deer and elk antlers. Others are made of brass or wrought iron and are made to hold candles. No matter which style you choose, a natural chandelier will make your rustic living room feel like a stately lodge of yesteryear.

Log Furniture

Log furniture can be quite comfortable, and a chair, couch or bookcase made from sections of unfinished wood is a great conversation piece. Choose pieces that feature dark leather cushions for more of a speakeasy, parlor-like feel. Lighter colored canvas cushions inspire visions of springtime woods.
