Great Recreational Sports For Adults

Recreational sports are not just for kids anymore. There are plenty of great recreational sports out there for adults too. Recreational sports are an excellent way to stay in shape and connect with your community and friends. Playing recreational team sports can do wonders for your health and well-being, and can even be a great way to network for you career. The benefits of playing adult recreational sports far outweigh the negatives. If you are looking for some fun athletic activity that won’t cost you a fortune, then try your hand at one of these great recreational sports for adults.

Tennis

If you are looking for a recreational sport that can be played solo or in a group, then you may want to give the great recreational sport of tennis a try. Tennis can be played solo or in teams of two. The only equipment you need is a racket and a can of tennis balls that can be purchased at your local sports store. Most cities have public tennis courts, and keep in mind that private athletic clubs will usually allow the general public to use their facilities during scheduled time and for a nominal fee. You can easily play a game of tennis with a few friends, neighbors or coworkers. However, if you are feeling a little more competitive, then you can join the adult/senior competition that is part of the United States Tennis Association.

Softball

For a more communal experience, you may want to try the adult recreational sport of softball. Participating in a game of softball is an excellent way to connect and bond with friends and coworkers. Playing in a softball league hosted through your work is a great way to network in your career field. It’s also a great way to get a good workout without putting too much strain on your joints and muscles. Softball leagues can be found at most places of employment. Your local Parks and Recreation Department will also have softball leagues and resources. Depending on the position you play in softball, you may need a glove and a softball bat that can be purchased at you local sports store. Very often, the softball league you join will provide you with equipment and a uniform for a nominal fee.

Swimming

Swimming is a great low-impact recreational sport with a high cardio benefit. You can take up recreational swimming by simply attending an open lap swim at your local public pool. You can find your local public pool through your Parks and Recreation Department, or by doing a little research online. You need minimal equipment to take up swimming. You will be in good shape to start this recreational sport with an athletic suit purchased at your local sports store and a pair of swim goggles. If you would like to swim in a more competitive environment, you can join your local U.S. Masters Swimming Program. U.S. Masters hosts adult swimming competitions across the United States, and they host an annual national swimming meet for those who qualify.
