Great Winter Hats for Men

By Marty Michaels , last updated October 23, 2011

Come this winter, you won’t want to leave the house without some sort of headwear, so now is the time to brush up on some of the great winter hats for men. Hats not only present a great way to top off a dashing look, but they also keep your head warm when the weather turns frigid. If you haven’t already, ditch your Joe Six Pack baseball cap in favor of a cool, dapper hat, whether it’s a fedora, porkpie, knit cap, or cadet cap. Continue reading for the lowdown on four great winter hats for men, all available from Hats In The Belfry and Dogfunk, two retailers that have tons of other choices if these don't quite fit the bill.

The Greek Fisherman

Ahoy matey! If you’re a sailor, fisherman, or just love the water, consider the Aegean Fiddler Wool Greek Cap ($25) for those chilly winter days. Imported from Greece, this styling fisherman’s cap is made in a town outside Athens by Aegean & Ulyssian, whose artisans have made these authentic caps since 1886. The cap is made of hefty black wool that will keep your noggin warm, whether you're navigating the Bering Straits or downtown Manhattan streets. Wear it with your trusty pea coat (a must-have men’s jacket this winter) and a wool sweater.

The Cadet Cap

For another dapper look this fall and winter, check out Hats In The Belfry’s cadet-style caps made by Belfry Army, Kangol, and others. Whether you dub them cadet caps, military caps, or Army caps, they are far more stylish than your typical baseball cap. One bestseller is the Belfry Weegham Woolrich Cadet Cap ($48, on sale for $25), a streamlined cap that fits closely to the shade of the head. It’s crafted from 100% pure Woolrich wool in sporty gray herringbone tweed. The wide bill will keep rain and wind away, and you’ll appreciate the comfort of the cap's satiny lining and grosgrain sweatband wherever you travel this winter.

The Knit Cap

Knit caps, beanies, and skullcaps are quintessential fall and winter headgear for snowboarders, skaters, and others looking for casual warmth. Dogfunk has more than 300 styles of beanies and other knitted caps from Coal, Burton, Oakley, and other sportswear companies. It’s difficult to choose, but one perennial favorite is the Hectare Beanie ($24.95) by Coal, currently available in khaki, heather gray, black, and fatigue. This snuggly and close-fitting cap features a cool crisscross crocheted pattern that will keep your dome warm even after a long, grueling day on the slopes.

The Peruvian Hat

Finally, for an unusual variation on the knit cap, check out the Broner Peruvian Wool Knit Cap ($28) from Hats In The Belfry. This wool knitted hat is a cold-weather classic that’s definitely the warmest of the four toppers described here. It completely covers the ears and back of the head for a tight, snug fit, and it has the signature Peruvian tassels below the ears. Granted, not everyone can get away with wearing this hat, but if you can, more power to you! Choose it in a blue, black, or olive geometric design and wear with confidence.
