Growing a Starburst Ice Plant

By Renee Gerber , last updated June 6, 2011

Growing the hardy starburst ice plant offers a lovely splash of color to any garden. Their colorful purple flowers closely resemble daisies and bloom during the early summer through first frost. If you are considering purchasing your own starburst ice plant, you should learn how to properly care for it.

The ideal hardiness zones to grow a starburst ice plant are 5 through 9. You can expect the plant to grow between two to four inches in height in maturity, and they enjoy a full amount of sunlight. Make sure you choose an appropriate location for planting and set the plant into a hole that is at least twice as wide as it root ball. Also, make sure the roots sit just at the very surface of the soil.

Keep in mind that, if you are seeking a plant that has fragrant flowers, the starburst ice does not fall under this category. The flowers are strangely lacking in scent, although they are quite attractive and will beautify your garden or front yard area with a wonderful splash of color. Typically, they are orchid pink in color and have a white center, much like a daisy. The petals are very thin, and you will find that you will never need to prune your starburst ice plants.

Make sure to adequately space your starburst ice plants when planting them. An appropriate distance ranges about between 10 and 15 inches, and this is necessary so as to avoid crowding, which can adversely affect the health of the plants. Make sure to administer a good amount of water to your starburst ice plants as well. They also tend to do well in basically any type of soil, as long as you remember to keep it moist.

Starburst ice plants are also highly resistant to periods of drought due to the fact that they are actually succulents.
