Grunge Chic Looks for the Spring

By Elizabeth Freeman , last updated May 17, 2011

This spring, the grunge chic look combines elements of grunge style, such as ripped, baggy pants and plaid flannel with stylish elements such as trendy sunglasses and jewelry. The new grunge look is slightly more classy and stylized than the look that was popular in the 1990s. Get in touch with your grunge-chic side by trying out some of these looks for spring.

Grunge Schoolgirl

Bring plaid into your look by wearing a plaid, pleated mini-skirt. Wear a fitted, but worn-in t-shirt, preferably with a favorite band's logo or snarky saying printed on it. Pull a long-sleeved button shirt over the t-shirt, but leave unbuttoned. Finish the look with a pair of fishnet stockings and black motorcycle boots. Wear your hair loose. You can skip shampooing it for a day to get the full, grunge look.

Floral Grunge

Add a touch of chicness to the grunge look by pairing a t-shirt with a faded floral screen print with a sleek black skirt for spring. Wear a pair of printed tights under the skirt. Go for plaid tights, or continue the floral theme with a delicate pair of watercolor floral print tights. Finish your grunge chic look with a fitted black blazer and thick-rimmed glasses.

Skinny Grunge

Pull on your favorite plaid flannel shirt but skip the over-sized jeans. Instead, wear a pair of skinny jeans in a light, blasted wash. On your feet, wear a pair of ballet flats. Complete the look with a fitted, worn military jacket and a large, chunky necklace.

Springtime Grunge

Cut an old pair of faded wash, boyfriend jeans into shorts. For an added grunge detail, add a few rips to the jeans or cut off a few of the belt loops. Add chicness to the look by wearing the cut-offs over a pair of black or brightly colored tights. Pair with your favorite old band t-shirt and tie a silky scarf around your neck or waist for added style.
