Hosting a Baby Shower

Hosting a baby shower is a wonderful way to help a close friend, family member, or coworker welcome a new life into the world. Not only will you be celebrating this special event, but you will also be achieving the very practical goal of helping the mother-to-be acquire many indispensable items needed to care for a new baby.

First, it is a good idea to get acquainted with the basic etiquette and guidelines for throwing a shower. Generally, it is acceptable for any close friend or family member of the expectant couple to be a part of the planning. A shower is usually planned around the seventh month of pregnancy, late enough in the pregnancy to be a nice distraction for the mother-to-be who may be starting to feel impatient or uncomfortable. It will also give the future mother an opportunity to show off a cute baby bump! In most cases, this will still leave plenty of time for mom to get the house ready for the baby with all her new items, even if the baby decides to make a bit of an early entrance into the world.

Consider consulting the mother and father-to-be regarding the guest list. You want to be sure all the important people in their lives are included, and be aware of anyone they would rather not invite. You can also get an idea for whether or not the couple would like the date to be a surprise. Although baby showers have traditionally been women-only events, coed showers are gaining popularity. Again, you can take your cue from the parents-to-be when deciding what type of shower to organize.

Refreshments are an important part of any shower, as guests will surely appreciate something to nibble on while watching the new mom open her gifts. Depending on the time of day, offer a light sampling of hors d' oeuvres or a more substantial option such as a full lunch buffet. A cake is a baby shower essential, and it provides a great chance to display a personal message or sentiment for the mother-to-be.

To entertain the guest of honor and everyone else in attendance, consider a fun game or two. One simple idea is baby shower bingo. On your computer, create a 5 by 5 box grid with a baby item in each square. Each grid should have a different arrangement of baby items. Create the appropriate number of game boards and distribute them to the guests as the mother to be is getting ready to open her gifts. Guests can mark each item off, and when someone gets five boxes in a row, they can win a prize.

New mothers often appreciate some heartfelt advice from older, wiser women who are experienced in motherhood. Consider a pretty, decorated sheet of poster board that can be framed, or a small blank book, to pass around to guests allowing them to write a note to the guest of honor. She is sure to look back on the day with fond memories as she reads everyone’s well wishes and advice.

You will want to have a small favor to give to the guests when they depart. Baby shower favors can be something as simple as pink and blue candies wrapped in a bit of tulle or cellophane and secured with a pretty ribbon. You could also choose to go with perennial crowd pleasers such as cookies or soaps, or even more intricate hand-made options and crafts.
