How to Apply Blush for Your Face Shape

When it comes to applying blush, you should always do so in a way that it is going to flatter your face. This is a given, especially for the colors you select, as you want them to look good with your particular skin tone. However, it's not quite as simple as only color you have to take into consideration. The shape of your face is also important when applying your cosmetics. As women, we normally only think about the eyes in this regard, but what about our cheekbones? Applying blush to flatter your face shape is equally as important.

The first step in learning to properly apply blush is to choose a good quality brush. This should be one of the larger, more durable blush brushes you see at department stores or pharmacies that would take up a good amount of space in your bag. A true quality brush must be large enough so that you can work on a broader scale. You can apply more blush with a single sweep over your cheekbone, as opposed to having to add several layers with the tiny brushes that come with small compacts of makeup.

Look in the mirror to apply your blush. Before you actually put it on your face, determine your particular face shape if you haven't ever already done so. There are several different face shapes, including round, square, oval, heart-shaped and rectangular. Where and how you apply your blush is dependent on the shape of your face.

If you have a round face, you will want to apply blush in such a way that it actually makes your face appear thinner, narrower. Run your brush down in a sideways V motion on your cheekbones. Then, you should blend the makeup slightly higher, and add a small dab of blush to your chin to give the appearance of having more length, yet also a narrower face.

To apply blush to a square-shaped face, apply the makeup high on your cheekbones and blend it into your temple area. As a final touch, brush a bit across your forehead. Do the same for a rectangular face, except that you should brush blush at the outer corners of your eyes instead of your temples. Avoid applying blush any lower than the very tip of your nose.

When you have an oval-shaped face, you are probably the envy of many women, as this is thought of as being ideal. You have a good symmetry in your face, with the forehead being wider than your jaw. Your cheekbones may be high on this type of face, and all you need to do when applying blush is to simply sweep your brush across the most prominent point of your cheekbones, from temples to about a half-inch to three quarters of an inch away from your nose.

A heart-shaped face is also considered to be one of the most beautiful types. The forehead is wider and the chin is somewhat tapered. This face shape also tends to have high cheekbones. To apply blush for this face shape, you should move your brush in a sideways V motion across the cheekbones. Blend the blush from your temple and extend it above your brow in the middle of your forehead.
