If you’ve ever wondered how to build a backyard barbecue island, you’re not alone; a backyard barbecue island is a wonderful and popular addition to an outdoor kitchen. It is challenging to build but eminently rewarding if you can build one that is durable and functional.
Begin by selecting a site in your backyard for the barbecue island. Consult your local fire department and building department to learn any rules for such placement. Secure any permits that might be required. Now measure the site carefully to determine the parameters for your project.
Dig an eight inch deep trench to fit the site dimensions you selected. Since you will be laying concrete blocks, have the length and width conform with the size of the blocks. Lay the blocks so that they are flush and level. Add sand if necessary to raise any blocks to be level with their contiguous blocks. Once your border of blocks is finished you should lay bricks and sand inside to completely fill in the foundation. Make sure the sand fills in all the cracks between the bricks.
Now pile more blocks around the back and sides of your pit to enclose it to a height of forty inches. Stack concrete blocks three high on the sides and back inside the walls to provide a mount for your grill. Set the grate in place and place blocks on each side and the back to secure it. This is the easiest way to create a barbecue island. If you want the grill to be sturdier, you can mortar between the blocks and the bricks.
If you are more ambitious, you can add side burners and other options such as a refrigerator and work areas. However, this will require you to have electric power to your island and possibly plumbing. You will have to buy all the components of your island and then measure them and frame them in wood. Next, secure them into the finished frame and then choose a countertop material for your work areas and apply it according to manufacturer's instructions.
Either way, you will potentially save thousands of dollars and have a quality barbecue island to enjoy.
