A hot house, or greenhouse, is a good idea for effectively storing and growing your tomoatoes. Tomatoes are one of the most popular types of vegetable people grow when they have a home garden, and you can save yourself a good amount of money on groceries once you have your own fruit to grow and enjoy. You can house the plants inside your hot house during the winter to protect your fruit, as tomatoes cannot do well in cold weather. Fortunately, it's not too difficult to accomplish this.
First, decide on the spot where your tomato hot house will go in your yard. The hothouse should be at least 12 square feet. You should make a trip to your local home improvement store to pick up the supplies needed to create your hothouse as well. These should include rebar pieces, wire, UV-resistant greenhouse plastic, cinderblocks, and piping.
Assemble a conduit pipe in place, with rebar appearing up from the ground until you have six pieces. Lay the greenhouse frame in proper position with heavy gauge wire around the top of it so that it reaches the end of each piping piece. Make sure to stretch it so that it reaches around to all of the pipes and wrap it around them. Keep the wire taut so that it stays in place. You can also paint the piping and wire if you want, although this is an optional step. However, if you decide to do this, use a type of latex paint.
Cover the hothouse you just made with the greenhouse plastic and set the edges with cinderblocks so that they stay positioned. You can then bring a heater into the structure. This is necessary to continue growing tomatoes through the coldest months. Keep the greenhouse plastic open at one end at any time you happen to notice the temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid overheating. You should turn on the heater whenever the temperature drops below 50 degrees.
Pot your tomatoes and bring them into the structure. You can even grow new plants from seeds by using a large bucket filled with the appropriate soil, as long as you administer an appropriate amount of water on a daily basis.
