How to Care for Night Blooming Jasmine

By Heidi Green , last updated January 25, 2012

Night Blooming Jasmine, also known as Cestrum Nocturnum, is an evergreen shrub that makes a wonderfully fragrant addition to any garden, but has specific needs for proper maintenance. Though somewhat understated in appearance, its tiny, whitish-yellow flowers open in the evening and release a lovely, powerful scent. Night Blooming Jasmine is perfect for planting near a window, as you'll be able to enjoy its fragrance while doing day-to-day activities. Follow these tips to make sure your Night Blooming Jasmine is well cared for.

Selecting and Planting

Since Night Blooming Jasmine blooms in the evening when most stores are closed, it may be difficult to spot in your local nursery. Ask for help when identifying a Night Blooming Jasmine, and when you bring your plant home, make sure you have a good planting spot in mind. Tropical in origin, this plant prefers warmer climates, and grows best in USDA Zones 8-11. It will bloom best in an area with bright, filtered sunlight, and likes rich, well-drained soil. Consider adding peat moss to your plant's soil, and plant it four to six feet from other plants as it can grow wide and bushy and needs room to spread.

Care and Winterizing

Only water your Night Blooming Jasmine when its top layer of soil has become dry, as this plant is prone to root rot caused by overwatering. It can be pruned as necessary, though you should try not to prune it during the first year of growth while it establishes a strong root system. Fertilize with a time-released or granular fertilizer in early spring. Since it isn't cold hardy in many regions, it will need to be brought indoors for the winter. Before the first frost, bring your Night Blooming Jasmine inside and place it near a window that receives southern exposure and plenty of sunlight. Room temperatures should treat your plant well during the winter months.
