A silk scarf can be a tremendous addition to any outfit because it can be worn just about any time and provides vibrant color and flare. Silk scarves can last for years if properly cared for, and there are a few things you can do to increase their lifespan. Read below for tips on how to care for your silk scarf.

Always store your silk scarf away from direct sunlight. Silk is a fine material and sunlight can warp the shape and color of it. When storing the scarf, roll it up rather than stuffing it into a drawer. This will ensure the scarf does not acquire unsightly crease marks. If you will not wear your scarf for a long period of time, take it out of your drawer or closet and allow it to obtain some air.

In addition to sunlight, harsh chemicals will alter the composition of your silk scarf. If you spray perfume on your scarf, for example, it will likely cause spotting or cause the silk to deteriorate. High temperatures also cause silk fibers to warp, so never put your scarf in the dryer. If the scarf becomes too wrinkled too wear, you will need to have it dry cleaned. You can do this at home, although taking it to a professional is the best way to make sure your scarf is treated properly. If there is any embroidery on your silk scarf, you will definitely need to take it to a professional dry cleaner.

If your scarf is exposed to excessive moisture, the silk fibers will stretch and become damaged. You may hand-wash your silk scarf with warm water and detergent, but make sure it is placed in an area where it can dry properly. The best way to do this is to place the scarf between two dry towels. Do not twist the scarf or wring it out. You may also iron your scarf using a low-heat setting.
