How To Clean A Gas Oven

By Justin Graves , last updated January 20, 2012

While not being very enjoyable, learning how to clean your gas oven is a process that everyone must undertake eventually. Performing regular maintenance on your gas oven will ensure that it continues to function safely and cooks your food properly.

First, you will need to make sure that your oven is completely off and that it is not hot to the touch. If you have used your oven recently, allow it to cool for at least several hours before attempting to clean it. Remove the wire racks from your oven and use a wire brush to scrape off the excess food or caked on debris into your trashcan. Then soak the racks in your sink by filling the sink with soapy water and allowing the racks to sit.

Now you can use a wet rag to wipe down the inside of your gas oven. If necessary, you can also wet paper towels to grab food particles and other debris that may have gathered at the bottom of your oven. You can also use a mixture of water and baking soda to scrub the inside walls of your gas oven. Allow the mixture to soak on the walls for roughly half an hour before wiping them down again with a wet rag. Go through again with another wet rag to ensure that all the baking soda has been removed from the oven and then you can replace your wire racks after drying them.

Finally, disassemble the stovetop parts of your gas oven and allow them to soak in soapy water for roughly half an hour. You can also use steel wool to remove any excess debris that may have gathered on the burners and related parts. Use a wet rag to remove any excess debris that may have gathered on your stovetop as well. Lastly, enjoy your nice clean oven!
