If you want to add bursts of exotic color to your wall with pictures of exotic plants you don’t have to spend a lot of money. In fact, if you shop your local used bookstore’s gardening section you may be able to purchase an old gardening book or flower encyclopedia with beautiful, detailed botanical illustrations of exotic plants just waiting to be framed and hung on your walls. If searching used bookstores isn’t for you, reproductions of exotic plant illustrations and paintings are available online and in stores.

First used as instructional illustrations, similar to medical illustrations or architectural drawings of columns archways, these detailed illustrations are delicate drawings and watercolors of plants that were used as reference in the Victorian era and during the first half of the 20th century. When hanging the pictures of these plants, you may want to find three or four illustrations of plants within the same family that can be hung together. This creates and interesting arrangement and can create a cohesive element to your wall hangings. Even better, if you find a truly rare illustration of an exotic plant or flower, you can hang it alone and make it a centerpiece of the room.

In addition, depending on the décor of your room, these lovely illustrations of exotic plants lend themselves to a variety of settings. Often simplistic yet striking illustrations, the frame you choose for the picture should lend itself to, and enhance your room’s atmosphere. For example, if the room is more ornate, choosing an illustration of an exotic flower in a gilded frame will make a bold statement. If however, your home is more modern, you should consider a simpler picture of an exotic, such as bamboo plant, and hang it in a simple floating frame or brushed metal frame.

No matter what your style, exotic botanical illustrations are a wonderful way to decorate your walls and bring a bit of the outside in, all year round.
