A misaligned zipper, be it on one’s pant, suitcase, or travel bag, is simply the most frustrating thing that could possibly happen to your clothes. It is the icing on the cake of a bad day. Following these simple steps will ensure that a cluster of poorly timed circumstances does not culminate into an explosion of misaligned zipper frustration. In fact, solving the problem will prove a satisfying turn of events.
Firstly, when the zipper is tugged and abruptly halted, count backwards from ten and loosen your finger grip. Pulling the zipper even more forcefully into the trouble zone will only exacerbate matters. Instead, pull the zipper backwards to the beginning of its route, and calmly try again. Remove any possible intrusions from its path, attempt to realign the teeth as much as possible, and slowly move it forward once more. If the problem remains, it is time to utilize a small set of tools.
The next step to this dilemma is properly identifying the source of the chaos. If the zipper itself is broken, yet the zipping mechanism is still effective, use a safety pin or piece of wire to act as a temporary pulling cord until the entire zipper can be replaced. If the zipper is effective, yet it has been misaligned from the track, pull it back to its starting point.
Then, remove the stitching that holds it in place and eliminate the zipper from the equation. This way, one is able to work entirely with the zipper teeth. Though it may be time-consuming, it will prove effective. Line up each opposing tooth by hand until the entire track is sealed. Then, put the zipper back on and watch it ride smoothly up its trail. If the track is beyond repair, and needs to be replaced, then either a sewing machine or needle and thread combination will need to be utilized to make the switch.
