Getting a job in social media is a dream for a lot of people, but very few actually fulfill their desire. Possessing a social media job is actually not much different than other desk jobs, as you will not simply be browsing Facebook or Twitter. There are all kinds of jobs available at social media agencies, from Social Media Executive to Social Media Analyst. If you have not had a job in social media yet, you will likely need to accept a position as a publisher who is in charge of a few social media campaigns. No matter the position you covet, there are a few ways to enhance your chances of earning your dream job. Read on for information on how to get a job with a social media agency.

First, you need to have quality profiles at all of the major social media sites. Make sure you have a spot on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and so on. Employers want to see that you are already familiar with the major social media sites. Make sure your profile is public and contains no incriminating photos or information. You can bet employers at a social media agency will be checking your accounts before you even walk into their building for an interview. Make sure you have social media profiles that stand out, too. Use a cool background on Twitter or show interesting photos on Facebook. Your accounts are basically a portfolio of your work. You should also have some knowledge on the lesser known social media sites, even if you do not have a profile. The more versatile your social media knowledge, the greater your chances of landing a job.

When applying for positions with social media agencies, make sure you highlight your knowledge of the industry. Know their lingo and use it. Social media agencies need more than someone who is simply addicted to Facebook. Instead, they covet employees who have in-depth knowledge of networking in a broader sense, as well as someone with the creativity to implement unique ideas. Show them you understand how the business works in your resume and cover letter in particular.

Social media is unique in that you can use it to get a job in social media. Networking is incredibly important for any job, so use your social media accounts to build relationships with people who can help you. Use your presence in the social media world to uncover people who already work in the industry. If you can build a rapport with them, it can only help.

Lastly, understand the specifics of a company prior to going in for an interview. Every social media agency is different, and they all possess different goals and aims. Show them you have done your research and understand their philosophy. If you can demonstrate that you know how they do business, you will have a leg up on the competition.

If all else fails, you can also do pro bono work for a company. If you boost a company's profits through efficient social media work, they will be more likely to hire you for a paid position. At the very least you have something to add to your resume.
